The Foster Child Grant (FCG) is a payment from the government of South Africa, to a foster parent (by a valid court order) of a child under the age of 18. The grant is for foster parents who need financial assistance to help take care of a foster child or children.

The value of the Foster Child Grant is R1 120, per child, as of 1 April 2023. The value of the grant is subject to change every 6 months (April and October each year). The grant will increase to R1 130 from 1 October 2023 (a R10 increase).

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SASSA FOSTER CHILD GRANT

In order to apply for the SASSA Foster Child Grant, it is important that you meet the criteria to apply (note that these criteria are subject to change). The criteria is as follows:

• You must be a South African Citizen, a Permanent Resident or a Refugee
• You must be the foster parent of the child and they must remain in your care
• You and the foster child must both reside in South Africa
• The foster child must have been placed in your custody by a court, due to any of the following reasons: they were orphaned/ abandoned/ at risk/ abused/ neglected
• The foster child must be under 18 years old

The application form is available at the SASSA office and must be completed in the presence of a SASSA officer. A SASSA officer will be able to assist you to complete the application form if you or they are unable to do so.

You will receive a dated stamped receipt after completing your application, with the name of the SASSA official who assisted you. You will need to keep your receipt as proof of application.

The application process is completely FREE.

FOSTER CHILD GRANT OUTCOME

Applications are assessed within 90 day, after which time you will be informed in writing, whether your application was approved or rejected. If you were rejected, SASSA will provide a reason for your rejection.
